The locks were sprung and the doors swung wide open. After almost 16 months of seclusion due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were once again venturing out. Just dipping our toes in the water of travel. So, Thursday, June 17, 2021, found us on the road to Washington DC for a long weekend.
Saturday and Sunday were dedicated to watching our grandson and his baseball team play a three-game series with a team from Washington. Thursday and Friday found us on our own to tour this interesting city. We decided to start with a visit to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception which is located on the grounds of the Catholic University of America.
The Basilica is the largest Roman Catholic Church in the United States and in North America. It is constructed in the Byzantine revival and Romanesque revival architectural styles. Construction began on September 23, 1920 and Iwas completed on December 8, 2017. It has 81 chapels which were designed to reflect the origins of Catholic Americans and the religious orders whose generosity erected them. There are marvelous mosaics throughout, all you have to do look is look around and, more importantly, look up.
