On the Mekong From Kampong Cham to Phnom Penh, February 8, 2024

The afternoon found us on the Viking Saigon sailing down river to Phnom Penh. I tried to capture life on the Mekong. Once again, the photos tell the story. Let’s start with the Saigon still tied up and a fellow bathing in the river. On more than one occasion we saw folks taking advantage of the river to wash up.

Life on and around the river is tough. But the river is, in large part, a beating heart of Cambodia. Fishing, along with farming, is a major way to feed a family and make a living.

People live on their boats. Look at the clothes hanging on the stern. What a life but, suppose it’s all you know. I can’t believe this vessel is still afloat.

The Viking Saigon is truly lovely. I thought, since we were on for the afternoon and evening, I would slip a few photos of the boat into our trip down river. The first two are the entrance to the lounge and then one of the lounge. The fourth photo is the outdoor cafe where we enjoyed many lunches and an occasional breakfast.

Working on the river.

And then, living on and near the river.

From shore to shore, this is a ferry. In the distance is Phnom Penh.

Night in Phnom Penh.
