Dockside in Zeebrugge, July 12, 2024

Our plans for today were to take a tour from the Sojourn to Ghent. Once there we would board a canal boat for a leisurely tour along the waterways. Then we would have 1 1/2 hours on our own to explore the historic old town. We’d never been to Ghent and were looking forward to this day, our last stop before heading home tomorrow.

We tied up dockside in Zeebrugge. The view from our cabin was of an industrial port that was inundated with rain; not just rain, but howling winds blowing the falling water sideways. We could see our fellow passengers, as they left the ship holding umbrellas, fighting with the gale and losing control of their bumpershoots. And, the forecast for the morning and afternoon was for more of the same.

We couldn’t see the two of us sailing along the waters of Ghent in an open canal boat in those conditions. So, our last day was spent on board the Sojourn, dry and comfortable. Packing, in any event, was inevitable and made easier but not being on tour. Sorry to miss Ghent, as we had been so looking forward to our visit, but satisfied that we made the right decision.

Tomorrow will find us, early in the morning, disembarking the Sojourn and on our way to Heathrow, terminal 5, for a flight to Philadelphia and home.

This is the last post for our journey. We enjoyed the trip; visited some new places and met some nice people. Now, we look forward to our next adventures. First, in January 2026, a leisurely cruise on the Enchanted Princess in the Eastern Caribbean followed by a stop in Las Vegas in April and a visit to the Italian Lakes with Smithsonian Journey’s in June. Rest assured I will be taking lots of photos, especially while visiting the Lakes, and blogging as we go.

If you are interested “like” my blog and you will receive notices as I post. That’s all for now. Thanks for dropping by to read about our journey.
