Hanoi Temple of Literature, February 3, 2024

In the afternoon we visited the Hanoi Temple of Literature. It is in the center of Hanoi and honors Vietnam’s finest scholars. it was founded in 1070 by Emperor Le Thanh Tong and is dedicated to the philosopher, Confucius. it is the site of Vietnam’s first university, Quoc Tu Guam, founded in 1076.

The altars are popular with students praying for good grades, while the ponds and gardens make picturesque backdrops for photos.

Originally admission was exclusively for those born of noble families, but that all changed in 1442 when gifted students from all over the nation were accepted to study the principles of Confucianism, literature, and poetry. The emperor ordered that stelae (large slabs) be erected to record the names, places of birth and achievements of exceptional scholars. They rest atop turtle statutes. Have a look.

It’s also a good place to take a photo when standing alongside the railing.

Enjoy a trip through the gardens.

I am partial to dragons.

A view from outside the wall, on the outside looking in.

Let’s end with my favorite shot from our visit.
