River Life, February 11, 2024

We were very fortunate to have good weather for most of our trip. Today, February 11, 2024, is no exception and we find ourselves sailing southerly in the direction of Vietnam. The following photos are intended to provide a glimpse into life along the river as we saw it from the Viking Saigon.

To be clear, there is no doubt that life along the river is demanding and rigorous. I wonder, as I often do as I travel, why people spoil their living areas by littering and discarding their trash in their own backyards.

Fishing and farming, that’s life along the Mekong. One last look.

In the late afternoon the Viking Saigon slowed and then came to a stop. We were at the border with Vietnam and members of the crew had to go ashore to deliver passports for inspection. These photos were taken at that time.

Activity seemed to increase exponentially.

Moving down river, having crossed the border, I took these last shots of the day. Welcome to Vietnam.

The first photo is of a fish farm community.

Notice the eye, peering ahead, on the bows of the ships at rest.
