A Stroll Around Bordeaux and the Citi du Vin, July 4, 2024

We made arrangements to meet a Greeter from Bordeaux, Marie. We joined her in the morning, meeting just off the ship and beyond security. We spent the next couple of hours with her meandering around. Bordeaux is truly attractive. Plantings everywhere, even in the middle of the street.

JoAnn and I found it interesting that vines and other living things could sprout from the sidewalks. Here is a photo of a grape vine and some of the grapes it produced.

Another example of a vine growing in the sidewalk. I believe this is a Wisteria.

A few shots as we moved along. I suppose I should tell you that, according to Marie, the original Statue of Liberty that was in that square was melted down for the metal by the Germans during World War II. The current installation is plastic.

We peeked into the Musee du Vin where I snapped this shot of its staircase.

We visited Au Petrin Moissagais Bakery, at 72 Cours de la Martinique, which has operated since 1765, serving hearty Gascon bread. This signature bread takes 90 minutes in the wood fired oven to achieve its hard, thick, crust creating an unusual loaf that will keep for an extended period of time.

A close up of the oven.

A typical street scene.

And another street scene.

Then this photo of the old in the foreground and construction of the new in the background. This is Bordeaux evolving for better or worse.

Then we bid Marie adieu and returned to the ship for lunch before departing for the Citi du Vin, an experience in the art and history of wine.

The following photos were taken from the top of the Citi. The first is of the river with the Sojourn in the background.

This photo looks in the direction of the submarine base from World War II which was built by the Germans. It is our destination tomorrow where we will visit the Bassins Des Lumieres, a light and sound show.

A closer shot of the sub base. It is the brown monolithic building in the distance.

Last is a shot of the bridge under which we will sail tomorrow night as we depart Bordeaux. It’s a draw bridge which lifts the roadway to the top of the tall towers.
