Bassins des Lumieres, July 5, 2024

We had tickets for Bassins des Lumieres for 10:30am. We took the tram from the ship to the Brandenburg stop and transferred to the number 9 bus. Three stops later we were near the old submarine base where the installation is in place.

Germans occupied Bordeaux from the end of June 1940. In 1941 construction of a submarine base was begun. It was inaugurated on 13 May 1943. Initially, Italian submarines were housed at the base. Today, the base is an art installation.

We visited to see the show, “From Vermeer to Van Gogh, the Dutch Masters.” What follows are some photos from our visit. I hope you enjoy the photos half as much as we enjoyed the show. Bear in mind, as you view this, that I really like Van Gogh. Also, you need to understand that music, appropriate to the subject, is playing throughout the presentation and the walls and water come alive with color.

Here are a few representative photos of the program.

It was a star filled evening.

How about a Vermeer or two? Lets start with “View of Delft.”

A peek into the homes of ordinary people going about their daily activities.

The show wouldn’t be complete without a girl with one pearl earring.

A portion of the program was dedicated to Piet Mondrian who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. These two are just a taste of his presentation.

Then, in another area, called the Cube, were two additional shows both of which displayed imagination and creativity. Here is one photo from each. Notice the people at the bottom right in the first photo.

The second photo depicts a flight of fancy.

Then, we were on our way back in search of the #9 bus.

We had a light lunch on the Place de la Comedie and then briefly visited the National Opera of Bordeaux before returning to the Sojourn. Here are shots inside this beautiful building.

One last glimpse of Van Gogh. It’s all about the eyes!
